NN3D slave

Second problem of my three.

I have 2 MFD8 displays. The one at the Nav station is Master, the helm is Slave. Our first trip out, I didn't have the Nav station back together, so no Master on line. The Slave wouldn't run.

I have it all back together, and all is good -- but it is upsetting. Redundancy is a good thing! In the future, if my Nav station system dies (broken wire, smashed display, flood, whatever), is there any way to make the Slave function without a Master?

Thanks

Harry

The NN3D design was all MFDs come up together and go down together. If the master becomes non-functional, the slave unit can be made the master and the system will work including licenced charts for 30 power cycles. After 30 power cycles, the master needs to be back on the system to prove legal licence to charts or all licenced charts will not be viewable until action is taken. Normally we recommend the unit used most on the network be the chart master. This way if someone leave the breaker off or problem with that less used unit the master/main unit of the system is fully functional without changing the master setting.

The boat is simple (well, OK, not THAT simple...), and both units are on a single breaker. With the "all units power together" feature, I don't have normal issues.

My concern is a failure of the master unit derailing the slave. The 30 power cycle feature is exactly what I'm looking for. How do I make that shift? I hope it's an easy menu sequence, so I can put that note someplace (front page of manual, for instance). In a perfect world, this will be information I'll never need... but the world isn't very perfect.

Thanks,

Harry

When the slave boots up saying it doesn't see the master; you are given the option to enter the setup wizard. You would enter the wizard and change the MASTER setting to ON and cycle through hitting NEXT until you can "SAVE and EXIT". At that point the now single slave will boot-up as a single Master unit with the 30 cycle count down notice. You might unplug the master and try it for yourself when everything isn't stressful. When done testing; you go under menu and run the installation wizard again and turn off the Master setting before restoring the real chart master.

I ran the test yesterday. Unplugged the Master, ran setup on the Slave, all was good (with 30 cycle countdown). Re-entered setup, turned off Master, system back to normal. Very good to know -- Thanks!

But it does raise the question. What is the basis for my license/key/registration/whatever? Is it the serial number of the master (or some similar embedded hardware token)? Is it something that can be saved and transferred to the Slave? If my Master dies (remember, the NN3D is an ageing system, but it is still doing the job), does the entire system become defunct?

While aging, the service center can still repair most NN3D products. If the master were to fail and you decided to condemn or dispose of it; it is possible to have tech support move your licences to your other unit. This will condemn the other unit in the licence system so that no one can ever buy charts for that old condemn unit again. We don't take moving licences lightly because the rights of the mapping companies have to be ensured.
