NavNet VX2 Radar Not working

I have a NavNet VX 2 10" unit with Radar. I can get the radar to come on, see the rotating antenna line on the screen, the range rings.
I have made sure that the Antenna type E 1954C/NT is set along with doing the following:
Installation Mode:
Set Range to .50 mile
Signal Proc to I REJ=LOW
E AVG=OFF
E STR=OFF
Gain Manual 10
A/C Sea Man. 10
A/C Rain 0
A/C AT off
Set Up STC Wide
Ran Radar Optimization then reset STC to Normal changed gain to Auto Mod, A/C Sea Auto Mod. and A/C rain to 0.
I still do not pick up any targets. The Radar Antenna and power unit were on boat but Display unit is new. Any ideas. It does the plotter overlay fine, split screen fine just not showing any targets, I was 1/2 mile from 3 anchored ships and none showed.

No, the screen is clear in Manual set, black screen, you can see the antenna line going around.

The display is a 2010 unit ser. # 4346-4111 which I think is a 1934 c/nt and has a 4ft open array antenna with a power supply box.

If you get no speckle, it looks like one of the three issues.

1. Scanner cable coax line that carries the radar video to the display is broken/damaged.
(check any junctions/splices and both ends of the cable for connection and corrosion then ohm cable from end to end)
2. IF amp (creates radar video)
3. Display SPU board (processes radar video)

Anything beyond item #1; I recommend you contact your dealer or send the system into the service center for evaluation.

Thanks Johnny, I will check, the display was installed new in 2012 when I purchased the boat, the radar was on it from the old unit that was stolen. The cable is one solid cable so I will check it. What amps should I see.

The IF amp (amplifier) isnt associated with amps (power). If you want to know how many amps the entire radar pulls, the 1934C/NT pulls a worst case 9.17amps (at 12vDC) with max radar and max screen brightness and all ports used.

Ok I understand that now, I have talked with the marina where I purchased the boat thru and as far as they know it was working, when the old display was stolen they had the new display installed and I got the boat right after. I was thinking there was a set up or install issues. I will check all the connector tonight. Is there any way to tell other then the decal on the back of the antenna unit to see for sure which one it is. It shows on the display 72nm range which is why I set it up with the E .
Thanks

This is the Mod. I got from the sticker of the antenna gear box, RSB-0072, and when I checked in the start up, "E" is the one that the unit is marked with. I ran a system check were it starts with ROM1 and has Machine Status +161 at bottom, shows everything as good, with total time at 120.4H Total TX 1.5H, I also ran the ARP test but is just scrolling adding more to the Machine Status at bottom.
So at this point not sure, all connections are good, no corrosion found, at radar start up it shows the Mag warming up, just will not show any targets.

RSB0072 would be either the 1954C or 1964C radar depending on what electronics is in it. Setting E is for the 1954C. It sounds like you have a 1954C radar. I am not sure how I thought you had a different unit. With that unit there is a power supply (PSU005) that sits between the display unit and the radar scanner. Have you checked it?

Yes, it has the power unit box. It powers up when ever I turn on the display unit and shows the green light above where the cables goes in from the antenna. I have printed both the ops. manual and Install manual to try and see if I have missed something. Don't know why installing a new display and connecting it up has turned into this. Installed lots of electronics and never had a radar come on, run, show antenna rotation line, mark rings but no targets. I"m going to try and run the ARP test if I can find the procedure to get to it.
All other systems, FF, Plotter and Auto Pilot work fine and talk with each other.

A Furuno dealer normally has a radar simulator that can be connected to the display for testing then also directly to the PSU005 for testing of the signal throughput. This radar will require a qualified tech or sending the unit in for evaluation.

Hello Johnny
I just read your question, when you change to manual, MAX gain do you have your radar screen full of speckled noise?
I am looking at buying a radar that is having this problem.
The owner thinks it is something in the settings but I'm not sure.
Can you please let me know your thoughts.
Scott

Your radar gets noise so it appears your cable is good and the IF amp is working. On the surface it looks like your magnetron might have gone bad or the modulator board. If it was working great before this happened, then it is most likely the modulator board up in the scanner. When a magnetron goes bad it is a slow degradation. The targets will get weaker and weaker until you don't pick anything up. magnetrons don't go bad from one day to the next. Modulators will be a quick failure. It looks like your unit will need service.

Thanks Johnny, the cable was chafed on the mast of a yacht and it was respliced and it was working again but then after turning it on a day or two later a warning message came up saying something was missing and to contact a Furuno dealer. Not exactly sure what it said was missing though.
