hi snips,
i am newbie to this forum and have just puchased the 295 I am about to wire up the transducer is it the same as the the b265lh. my question relates to tap settings.both hi and low frequency are wired to tap c ? does the tap setting just cotrol the output of the sounder?I am also wanting to be able to take the sounder out of the boat each time do you have any suggestions re plugs. i will be using it for deep dropping 500m does the transducer have LF sweet spot ,would you suggest 38-40?

Billfishman,
While the FCV-295 can use either the 265 or 509 I am a little confused on which one you are planning to use, can you clarify this for me. Both transducers will wire into the sounder the same way and the orange three pin transducer plugs will act as quick disconnects. Since these plugs are the same I advise you label them so you don't swap the frequencies when reconnected. The power connection is into a two place terminal strip but you should be able to find a two pin inline connector for this.

Snips,
i am planning on using the 509. the orange 3 pin plugs you refer to r they ones in the machine? with the wiring the positions: 1 takes the LF positive and HF positive and position 3 takes the negative , is this a problem if they r the other way round ie the negatives are in position 1. with regard to initial power up and set up can i do this without the transducer connected.

If you remove the back cover plate you will find the three pin transducer plugs. Uses pin 1 & 3 on the connectors, the transducer wiring is not polarity sensitive. If you are using a 509LH set both the LH and HF Taps for "C". You can power and program the 295 without the transducer connected.

Hi Snips,
What frequency do u think it works best around? How close can you go to the blocked out frequency for example can you go to xdrc settings in high and set it at 170 with band width of 80.If i had it at this setting could i go into frequency control and set it at 200 khz without having to go into xdrc menu? What is the difference in beam width angle between 170 and 200 khz? With regard to tvg the default setting is level 4 and 200 metres so if i was fishing in 400m i would set the level at say 6 and distance at 500m and if i was fishing in less than 80m i would set at say level 2 and 100m?

The FCV-295 has three blocked out frequency ranges 53 to 65, 111 to 139 and 171 to 183Khz. If you want to try the useable 139 to 171 band I would set the HF frequency at 155Khz with the bandwidth of 32Khz. If you want to use the higher 183 to 220Khz band you will need to reset the center HF frequency. You will find very little beam width difference between 170 to 200Khz. It is very hard for me to say set your TVG Level to X and the TVG Distance to Y for the best display. Just remember "Less is More". The lower the setting the more you will see, this is the same with both the TVG and Clutter controls. The best way to see an example of this is by using the 295's DEMO mode. By selecting one the sounder preprogrammed DEMO programs you can get a good feel how the controls work without leaving the dock. As to the best frequency to use, I didn't see much difference on the HF side but I think the LF works a little better around 38Khz.
