Wanted to confirm that bottom lock is similar to “shift” in that the unit is focusing on particular range of water not simply magnifying the pixels as bottom zoom would do.

That is correct. Additionally, it locks the bottom "flat" so that you can better distinguish small echos close to the bottom.

"Bottom Lock" is a function that is useful during rough weather where the vessel is rolling and pitching and where this vertical movement of the boat creates a distorted or rolling image of the sea bed.

"Bottom Zoom" is useful to enlarge view of the bottom. The bottom area is then magnified and follows the contour of the sea bed.
