adding AIS

I Have a RDP-149 wanted to add AIS can this be done with a ICOM M506 VHF ? or do I still need to add a FA-30 unit. and how can I add it to my network ?

The Icom is NMEA 2000, the RDP149 is NMEA 0183 so they don't normally work together. It can be done but you must build a NMEA 2000 network and add a NMEA 2000 to NMEA 0183 converter. You can then use the 0183 AIS data to data port 2 of the RDP149.
