Wind direction

I have a FI-70 display, a FI-5001 masthead wind instrument and a IF-NMEAFI 0183 to NMEA 2000 data converter. The wind direction is showing incorrectly on the FI-70 display. For example Wind blowing directly behind is showing as blowing directly in front. Ie a difference of 180 degrees. Wind blowing at 150 degrees on the starboard side is showing as 30 degrees on the starboard side, ie a difference of 120 degrees. Wind blowing at 120 degrees on starboard is showing as 60 degrees on starboard side, difference of 60 degrees. By extension if it was blowing as 90 degrees on starboard would be showing as 90 degrees on starboard, a difference of zero. Same numbers are indicated on RD-33 as on FI-70. Wire colour joins have been triple checked from masthead unit to date converter. Have spoken to 2 Furuno techs who have never heard of this before. Can anybody help please. Am about to embark on trip from Panama to Tahiti in next 72 hours and would love to have this problem solved while I have internet access.

Hi Dez,

So if the FI-5001 is talking on the NMEA2000 canbus, you will need to check what you are using as your Data Source for wind (section 4.10 in the manual) for the FI-70 display. Check the Sensor in Use (section 1.4 in the manual). You might also want to check and see that there is not a 180 degree offset in the Data Calibration menu (section 4.12 in the manual).

In addition to Mr. Limpet's suggestions, and in the interest of time;
Which wind display are you using in the FI70?
Are you set to true or apparent?
If true, do you have a known good speed through water source?

Hi Mr. Limpet, have run through each of those with Furuno Techs and all OK.The offset number is zero. The Techs have said they have never seen this before. Thanks for your advice.

The display in use is the close hauled display. Currently at dock until casting off in the next 48 hours...assuming my magnetic clutches for autopilot arrive from USA! The speed /depth thru hull is working fine. Thank you.

If everything appears to be configured correctly, then there may be a data issue with your NMEA2000 canbus. I would not cast off until you determine if there is a canbus issue that could be affecting this instrument (and then find out the hard way that it might also affect other instruments while underway). If you are not sure how to troubleshoot this, then maybe check with Furuno Panama locally to see if a technician can come out to the boat to look at things.
