TZT14/DFF3 - not talking to 82b

Had my first trip out with the TZT14/DFF3/82b35r combo today and the sounder is only working in demo mode. When I turn demo mode off the screen freezes and the unit needs to be reset. With demo mode turned off the display is just a blank screen which says ST-BY.. The transducer has been set up with on the DFF3 with TAP E on the LF side and plugged into no. 1 & 3 on the WAGO connector. DIP switches #1 & #2 are switched on. The DFF3 unit is also flashing fast, does this mean transducer set up incorrectly? Any help much appreciated!

Good morning Intrepid26,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Couple of questions, was the DFF3 ever connected to another unit previously? Maybe a NN3D or Vx2?

I think we can get you squared away. I think it would help to perform a master reset on the DFF3 and start over with the setup through the menu. Please follow the steps below, that should be the trick. Typically a fast blinking light, .4 seconds, indicates that the transducer has not been setup in the Menu. You could try to set up the transducer manually, you can start with 88 kHz, and choose enough bandwidth that will give you the ability to reach the high and low of that transducer. The high being 110 kHz and the low being 65 kHz. After you setup the transducer in the menu you will need to cycle power on the DFF3 box, then reapply power. You may also need to re-select sounder source in the menu, only after a master reset though.

Thanks for the detailed response, you are correct that the DFF3 was originally connected to an older unit navnet unit. When I bought it (used) only DIP switch #1 was switched on. I went through the reset process and nothing has changed. I called Furuno support (Australia) and they have pointed out the software for both the DFF3 and TZT are in need of updating. The version numbers are TZT - 04.04:04.21:01.02 and DFF3 - 0252362-01.05. The guy I spoke to was fairly confident that a software update of both units will solve the issue. Hope he's right!

Good morning Intrepid26,

Thank you for your feedback. Just to confirm, once you manually entered the frequency specifications in the menu, you powered the DFF3 off, then back on again? The power needs to be cycled on the DFF3 in order to lock in the transducer specifications that you input on the TZT unit.

Looking at the software for the DFF3, version 1.05 is the latest revision available here in the states. So according to those numbers the DFF3 is at the latest version. You also indicated that the TZT14 is runing version 4.21, that is not the latest version of software available, it is one revision behind. With all that being said, I do not believe it is an issue with the software version that the units are running. There could be an incomplete software load causing the fault but I believe the version of software on both units is capable of running the two units together. Hope that makes sense.

Please try to confirm that power was cycled on the the DFF3 before trying to use it after the transducer selection has been made in the menu. Powering down the TZT 14 will not achieve this result. The DFF3 must be powered off at the breaker, or source.

Kind Regards,

C-Bass,

Yes, I manually set up the transducer in LF 88Khz and bandwith 44, once I did this I powered off the DFF3 then powered it back up. I did this two different ways, the first time I turned off the power to all the electronics and powered back up which didnt work. The second time I only unplugged the DFF3 but kept the TZT going then plugged it back in, Neither worked. Maybe I'm not giving it enough time? Also should I be unplugging the LAN cable to the TZT and the transducer cable as well? I didn't do this but thought that might have been part of the process. Also I called Furuno today and they said that there is a version 1.06 for the DFF3? They said an update would usually be the first thing they try as a process of elimination..

Thank you Intrepid26,

Based on the info you provided I don't think updating is going hurt. As I mentioned above the current version of software in the TZT and the DFF3 are known to work together. There is a chance that one of the units may have a corrupt software load, so by updating you should be cleaning the old (possibly bad software) and replacing with a good load. You might give it a shot.

You should not have to remove the LAN cable or the transducer cable. You also might try to give the sounder more time in the off position. The DFF3 has some large capacitors that take a while to drain out, so you might give the sounder a minute or two in the off position before re-applying power.

Keep us posted with your progress.

Kind Regards,
C-Bass
