Tzt3 12 unit (exceptional) that I have not updated it to version 2.01. I assume this is not mandatory and it will function as is as long as I do not need the additional functions?

The current version of software for the TZT12F is 3.5. It is always advisable to update to the most current version to get the most out of your TZT3. With each software update there are additional features added. The unit will certainly function on your current version.

Thank you. Much appreciated. Looks like I am way behind. If I update to the latest version, 3.5, does that take care of prior software updates that I have missed? (or do they need to be updated individually?)

Yes, when you update to the latest version 3.5 you can jump right to it without doing incremental updates to the previous ones.
