1722c has no targets but does have one large orange ring on the display. Gain, sea clutter and tuning have been checked and adjusted. antenna is turning. have not checked magetron heater voltage. the ring covers about 20% of display surface and is present at all ranges at about 1/2 from center of display to outer edge. center of the display looks normal with mark that increases as the range decreases.

It sounds like you have water inside the scanner. I recommend you open the scanner and check for water/moisture.

moisture was not the problem. the scanner was not turning. the belt had come off because the small pulley was loose. radar works good after fix. as I was replacing the cover I noticed what looks like a silicone seal had been placed where the rubber gasket sits. Is this a good idea? Was it part of original assembly procedure?

Normally when an antenna isn't turning, for the belt or otherwise, it will give a heading pulse/bearing pulse missing error at the display. I am glad you found the problem.

Can you post a photo of the silicone? I am not sure exactly what you are trying to describe.

Johnny, this is now working great. Another question. I was wondering if I can connect a larger screen (monitor?) to the existing system?

You could add a 10.4" Vx2 to your network and it could read any radar, GPS, and sounder from your existing NN1 system. Since the Vx2 uses different (newer) charts, it will not share charts over the network but you can get a chart card for the Vx2. You can NOT connect your existing scanner unit directly to the 10.4". It would have to remain connected to your existing 7" display.
