I have an older non functioning radar on my boat I purchased several years ago. I have just purchased a Garmin MFD as my primary and would like to get my furuno going. I only have clearance for the 3.5’ / 41” open array. The new model set up fits that but it is just out of my budget so am looking at the older ones. Max Marine has some refurbished models for around $1500.00. My question is which model was the last produced and most advanced in that series ? Looks like most had the RDP - 149 VX2 but there maybe a better MFD that will work with this older layout. This is going to be my back up system with GPS and charts as well. Thank you for your thoughts.

I recommend talking to Max Marine as they know the units well and what they have available. Vx2 is getting pretty old (Released~2005) so if it was me, I would look at a TZT1 (~2012), TZT2 (~2016) with a Digital radar. Of course no Furuno radar will work directly on the Garmin MFD but you could share some data back and forth by NMEA 2000. If you only want radar and they have good VX2 system they are solid but the digital units are easier to run cable and normally higher features. It would be best to discuss question with Max.
