New DRS12 4' Open Array Noisy Gearbox

I just replaced my trusty 1942 radar 4' open array with the DRS12 4' open array. Firing it up for the first time I'm surprised at how noisy the gearbox is compared to my previous Furuno. Anyone know if this is normal.

The DRS12A operates with the NN3D or TZT system at variable speed depending on range.
Short range operates at 48rpm which can be loud. Range out and you will hear the rotation slow down.

You might also check the mounting. Be sure the pad was placed between the top and the gearbox.

Thanks Melville - I did go thru the rpm range and the rubber pad is in place. It still seems significantly louder than the 1942 6kw 4ft open array I just had. Just wanted to know if this was normal or is there something amiss with my gearbox.

When running higher speed it will have more gear noise; this is normal. If mounted on a posted it can reverb or amplify the sound and make it seem worse than it is. If your mounting hasn't changed but you find the noise too much, you can always change the radar to run a fixed speed of 24rpm. This will reduce the radar sampling due to the lower speed but the option is there.
