GP1971 Transducer Issue – Reads Temp but Not Bottom

Hi all,

I’ve got two GP1971 units — one set up as a sounder and the other as a fish finder. The other day while out on the boat, I noticed I wasn’t getting a bottom reading on one of them.

I checked the P66 transducer and saw it had unclipped up, so I clipped it back into place. Still no bottom reading — just the temperature showing

I tried unplugging the transducer from that GP1971 and plugging it into my other unit, and it worked perfectly there (reading both temp and bottom fine). So the transducer itself seems to be okay.

Has anyone come across this before or have any ideas?

Could it be a setting, a software issue, or something wrong with the sounder input on that unit?

Appreciate any help — cheers!

Below images just in the driveway. Pic on left is the faulty mfd. it’s like it’s trying to read and just resets every 30 or so seconds. Pic on right is the mfd it is working on. This just seems to be sending a steady pulse.

I would recommend a better test in the water of at least 15 ft. If the transducer hit something and unlocked it might have damaged the elements. Out of the water neither photo shows anything conclusive. If either is a 1KW it shouldn't be ran outside of the water or you can overheat the elements and damage it. It is rare to see the sounder in these have an issue. Between two sounders and two transducers, you should be able to gain some troubleshoot ground once it is in the water. Alternatively, Airmar has a TDT1000 transducer tester and a dealer could sweep them.
