Installed a GP1971 flush mount in an aluminum helm panel. The unit takes forever to acquire satellites, 2-4 minutes ? Separating the GP1971 from the helm panel with a plastic spacer be of benefit ? Does this unit have highway mode for navigating to waypoints on a route ? as did the GP7000 ?

If it is in a metal box, I am not sure a plastic spacer will help much. When you say highway mode, are you talking about the screen shown on page 9-3 of the operator's manual?
