FAP-5001 addition NG to Autopilot system

Aloha, I am adding a FAP-5001 controller to my bridge which was bought used working. Going by the setup pdf, ive connected it via 7 pin connector/wire to processor TB 10 and switched jumper JP1 to #3-4 as instructed. Controller comes on and ultimately fails “NG”communication. I took the unit and placed it on my current FAP down in the cabin that works ok. It does the same thing, “NG”. I connect my cabin unit up, it goes ready no problem.

Am I missing something? I did notice both controllers are listed as “controller 1” in the menu. Is there a way to manually change this or is this even an issue??

Thanks in advance.

Ensure the terminator on the back of the controller is installed. If it is, verify that the final software version is installed in both displays and the processor. It may be a software mismatch between the controller and processor.

Thanks Reaper. Yes the terminators are installed on both units. If it is software, how do I update it? I will check the downstairs cabin unit vs the newer unit.
If the unit is bad, does Furuno still repair these old units?
Thanks for the help.

Thank you Reaper. I am assuming the instructions are for the 5001 as well as the 511? Just clarifying. And, looks like I will need a usb to serial adapter to a 7 pin furuno plug with correct pin-out connections to adapter.

The instructions are the same for updating the FAP5001 and FAP5011 controllers, however I double checked the link and there's no controller software...only processor software. The older equipment is a bit trickier to update. To be honest, I would recommend sending the two displays and the processor to our Service Center to ensure that nothing goes wrong. To do that, use this RMA link to do that: https://furunousa.com/en/myaccount/returned_merchandise_authorization

Ok I think that is a good idea. I just wont have autopilot for a while until I get the units back.
I appreciate all your help! You guys have been amazing help in the past for my older Furuno equipment. Keep up the great work helping folks like me who have to do their own repairs😬
