CA28F-18 with a FCV-295

I could really use some help. I have a SS270W tranducer hooked up to my FCV-295 and I love it for fishing above 600 feet. I'm trying to see deeper structure and fish schools so I got a CA28F-18. It's and older out of production 2kw transducer so I'm really having trouble finding any info on wiring, menue settings or tank requirements. Can anyone tell me where to find instalation info for this tranducer or share advice on the best way to hook it up?

I have a 24 foot boat and I will only be using this 28F-18 half the year. I was hoping to build a custom transom mount for it. I would just use it for slow speed searching and it would be submerged when in use. Do you think that could work or do I need a mineral oil filled tank?

Over the years, I've seen all kinds of modifications when mounting all kinds of transducers. I highly recommend mounting transducers in locations were they will be constantly wet-faced, will have good waterflow across the transducer's face, and with no turbulence.

I am not a fan of any shoot thru-hull style transducers, as there is too much of loss, especially when used in deeper waters. If you can fabricate a mount for your CA28F-18 transducer, and it's within those requirements, then that transducer should perform to your expectations.

That’s great news! I’ve always felt the same way about shoot through setups.

Do I need to worry about the transducer overheating if only the face is in the water?

Conventional Wave (fixed frequency) transducers typically do not generate the heat that CHIRP transducers do. However, you should never run any transducer "dry", and always ensure that the face of the transducer is completely submerged in water, and as I have stated before that it has a good clean waterflow over the entire face for the best performance.

I've attached a picture of a Furuno Pocket Mounted Transducer that has been used as a transom mount transducer by using a custom fabricated transom mounting bracket.

Ok good to know, thanks! I was planning to seal it in a fiberglass fairing with just the face exposed to the water. The whole thing should be waterproof when I’m done. Do you think 5200 will stick to the black rubber of the transducer or is there a better product that will stick to that rubber?

I've seen a lot of boatyards use: 3M's 5200, and it's a high-strength polyurethane sealant used on installing larger sport boat transducers. However, it does have very strong bonding properties and can make the transducer very difficult to remove it if you need to later. Some installers do like use polyurethanes like: Sikaflex's 295 UV, or 3M's 4200 instead.

If you design a fiberglass fairing to protect the transducer, that would be the great idea. The CA28F-18 was originally designed for use in Commercial Fishing Industry, so it has been constructed to take abuse.
