New FCV-588 will not display depth or autorange properly.

The FCV-588 replaced a FCV-585 that served well for 10 years. The transducer is a four year old Airmar B744v that worked well with the FCV-585. The wiring is in good condition and a good ground is present. The sensor selection is "600W", but other settings perform similar.
When the FCV-588 is initially turned on, depth is displayed for about a half second. Autorange will not settle and appears to be hunting. In manual range a bottom can be displayed and responds to manual gain changes or auto gain, but depth is not displayed. I've attempted using various settings in depths from 8' to 150' with the same problem.
Attached, are some screen shots and a short video of the autorange hunting...

Thanks for your help!!

Try these steps. First reset the FCV588 to factory defaults by choosing RESTORE under the SYSTEM menu.
Then select TRANSDUCER from the SYSTEM Menu, choose MODEL and select 525STID-MSD.
Set your draft back in.
Run it manual gain and manual range.
Mode to Dual.
Manually set Range to put bottom in the lower 1/3rd of the screen.
Manually adjust the gain to get a solid dark reddish brown bottom echo.
If digital depth does not display with a strong bottom echo set the BOTTOM LEVEL to -20.
You might have to adjust the Gain Adj HF and LF to compensate for the transducer.

Thank you!! That got it working in 10' with a mushy bottom and provided superb education in the effect of the various adjustments and parameters. This forum is a brilliant efficient solution to customer service and education.
