US chart updates

I understand these units come with all charts installed and the NOAA charts (raster and vector) unlocked.

There seem to be a lot of ATON changes around here lately. How often are these NOAA charts for the units updated? What is the process for loading updated charts? And are there any costs for these updates?

Thanks.

NOAA charts are updated once a year (normally in very early spring). These updates are currently and have been for many years posted to the Furuno USA website for download free/update.

Do you take the SD map card out of the tzt update on computer then reinstall in tzt? What is the update process?

Yes the map chip is removed and the downloaded files are unzipped and placed onto the card with the PC. After the map chip is updated it is returned to be placed in the unit as it was.

Johnny, one more question along these lines. I primarily use the vector, fishing and occasionally the 3d chart for the gulf of mexico usa. If I identify those three charts and only keep those charts on the intalled SD card, removing all others, would I see a performance increase? Either a quicker boot up time, or any increase in operational performance? I seem to remember reading something like that at one point in time. I could backup the SD card first so I have the ability to restore it if need be. Thank you.

You will not see a noticeable difference. For example when we moved from 128GB map chip with charts to the 256GB map chip with charts we saw maybe a two second difference. Less charts only reduces the indexing time of the charts on power up and that process is pretty quick. While it is good to free up space for things you want to add like SAT photos, I wouldn't worry about trying to get excessive with deletions.

When doing an update of the US charts, should they be added to ALL connected TZtouch3 units that are networked together, or just to the master? Thanks.

Yes, all TZ Touch units must have a copy of the chart in order to access it's content regardless of it's status of master or slave. If two charts of the same type are loaded to the plotter, the plotter will pick the one that's most recent.

We are overdue for an update of NOAA charts we use while cruising the US East Coast between Florida and Maine. Following the guidance obtained from this conversation string in the Forum I've found the charts for TZTouch3.

1. To obtain the NOAA updates to the both the Raster and Vector charts I must remove the SD card from each of my two MFDs, download, unzip and transfer three files to the SD cards: MM3-USR-001 and 002 plus MM3-USV-000. Please confirm or redirect.

2. We have started the Fall transit from Maine to Florida. So not to risk an interruption in the great reliability we have with the NavNET installation is this something we can safely do while in transit, or should I wait until have reached our winter base in Florida?

It is always recommended to update charts at port to ensure success before going out on the water. Yes, you have found the correct NOAA Raster and Vector files and simple update process. Well done.

Today I updated two TZT12F MFDs in my NAVNet system to software version 3.5. The update resolved a couple of problems I was experiencing with the 1.07 software; AIS icon display on RADAR in night mode and Anchor Alarm circle visibility. When downloading the software update to both monitors I observed chart information was downloaded. Once the downloads were complete I observed chart updates were made in a body of water we traveled earlier this week where three buoys had been replaced with day marks. The changes were observed on the NAV station monitor down below, the primary display, but not on the Helm monitor. I've tried rebooting both monitors but still the chart updates seem to have been made only on the primary monitor.

1: Did the Version 3.5 update include both Raster and Vector chart updates for the US East Coast from Eastport ME to Dry Tortugas FL?

2: How do the chart updates made to the primary display share to the secondary display?

The software programing only provides updates to some of the higher level base charts, not the normal navigation charts. Normal navigation charts are updated by the user. Charts do not read over the network, nor have they ever. Charts must be updated on the chart card of each machine. If you load a new chart to the chart card on one machine, it will not reflect on the others until someone updates those chart cards also.
