trying to hook up my garmin to vx2 via nmea 0183

been trying for the past 4 hrs to hook up my garmin to a vx2 to no avail
the garmin is a 54 dv echo map it only has 2 nmea wires one is tx and one is rx and i keep getting a fail to receive data via network from the vx2, there’s 4 nmea wires, 2 rx one + one - and two tx + and - what im i doing wrong, have it hooked up to the data 1 port

Your problem is that your Garmin unit isn't following the NMEA standards for 0183. (RS422 NMEA signal levels). If you only have the two wires and a common ground, they have gone the cheaper RS232 (PC level NMEA) method. It is NMEA data but not to the certified standard level. To connect it properly you would need an RS232 to RS422 level converter so you can get the proper signal levels. There are many level converters on the market to choose from.
