Are these mfds viewable in direct sunlight? Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated

Yes they are viewable, even with polarized glasses.

One issue I have found is that the screen does get very hot in direct sunlight, like too hot to touch, which I suspect is not good for the display! I had an error pop up on the display related to overheating a few times.

I ended up creating a little duct in the facia that the tzt2 is mounted in to blow air over the display, not had a problem since.

Good idea, proper ventilation is important. Putting units in a sealed NavPod without vents or sealed into a console without any airflow is a great way to burn out your electronics.
