Spare MFD

I got an MFD12 Master and MFD8 slave with several unlocked maps. I have found a used MFD12 that i would like to purchase and keep on the boat in case i loose the Master MFD12 in the middle of the ocean.

What is the correct way to do it ? Should i integrate the spare MFD12 as a slave in the current Navnet network, install the map on it and then remove it from the network to store it ?

Or what ?

thanks :sail

Good morning NorthCaptain,

I beleive we could also link the two System ID's together, meaning you would only run one at a time because you cannot have two masters on the network at the same time. The easiest way would be to add the second MFD12 to the network once you load the charts on it. Once it is removed from the network you will be able to use the charts for 30 power up cycles.

I you want to link them together you will need to call our tech support with the System ID of the current Master MFD and the SI of the 2nd Master MFD.

Kind Regards,

C-Bass

Hi C-Bass,

Thanks for your response. Is it possible to integrate the spare MFD12 as a slave in the network, install the charts on it and power it off. If i have a failure on the original MFD i would do a swap and upon powering up the spare MFD12 i would reconfigure it as the master of the network.

Would that work ?

Good afternoon North Captain,

Yes presumebly that would work, however I have not personally tested that method. So you if you have the time i would test it just to make sure. If it does not work, then we can link them so the 2nd MFD12 would get it's own set of unlock codes.

It is not possible or needed to link licences for same series units on the same network. If you don't wish to run the unit, and only want as a spare; then 1) Connect the unit up on the network as a slave (so that it obtains the master's system ID) 2) Ensure the designed chart(s) are loaded and working. 3) Disconnect it from the network 4) Make it a master and power off. It will not be ready to be a quick spare for your master unit. It will function with licence charts for 30 power cycles. This normally translates into 30+ days to get your original master up and working. If the original master is non-repairable, then it is possible to condemn the unit and have the licences legally moved to your new (spare) master. Hopefully that makes sense.

Thanks Johnny for the explanation. This is a good solution. Another question, the unit comes with licensed charts that i don't have. Is it possible for me to get ownership of these charts since i'm purchasing the unit and the owner ask a premium for the charts ?

If so then what is the sorcerer summoning i should do ?

NorthCaptian-
The chart license is associated with the system ID. If this was a master and he removed his purchased charts you could just load them back in.

Hello Grand Amiral Melville,

Understood but what will happen when i follow the procedure detailed by Johnny to convert the MFD12 into a spare for my current Navnet network (there is already an MFD12 master and an MFD8 slave) ? Is there a way for charts that are on the new MFD12 to be associated with the System ID so that the current MFD12/MFD8 can use them?

The charts in the spare unit can also be placed on the other MFDs. However, the spare would have to be the master when you set up the network. After you disconnect it from the network and reconfigure master/slave for the original system the charts would only be available for the 30 turn on limit.

What are the charts on the used unit you want to obtain? You can PM me and I can check if they are even up to date.
