Single TZT22X - Recommendations for Navigational Backup

Good evening. I'm upgrading my TZT2 12's (twins) to a single TZT22X on my Seavee 29. I'm researching using an ipad as a backup navigational aid in case the TZT22X went down especially when going back and forth in the islands. I also have a Garmin Inreach that I use so my wife can track my location and serves as a backup EPIRB.

Has anyone used the Garmin Earthmate App with Noaa charts to do this?

Would appreciate anyone with real world experience.

Thanks

So if I get a GPS enabled IPAD and use TZ IBOAT I can synchronize everything thru the cloud and the GPS will work as a backup if the screen goes out correct? Do I need to get a Garmin GLO 2 Bluetooth GPS to enhance the ipad functionality? Finally is the TZT22X bluetooth capable as well in case my furuno satalitte gps antennae goes down?

Many thanks!

Hi CBBeaty,

Yes, if you get a GPS-enabled iPad (specifically a cellular model, since only those have built-in GPS), you can run TZ iBoat and sync your waypoints/routes via the TIMEZERO Cloud with your system. It’s a great backup option if your main MFD screen fails.

Adding a Garmin GLO 2 or similar Bluetooth GPS can improve accuracy and refresh rate, especially in tricky signal areas or on Wi-Fi-only iPads, which don’t have built-in GPS.

As for the TZTXL systems: they do not have native Bluetooth capability for GPS input. The system relies on NMEA2000/0183 inputs for GPS data, usually coming from a Furuno GP330B, SCX20, or similar antenna. If your Furuno satellite GPS antenna fails, the iPad won't backfeed GPS into the TZT system, but you'll still have location data in TZ iBoat for navigation on the tablet itself.

So in short:

  • Yes, GPS iPad + TZ iBoat = solid backup + cloud sync.
  • Garmin GLO 2 = useful for better GPS signal, especially on Wi-Fi-only iPads.
  • TZTXL = no Bluetooth GPS input; use NMEA GPS antennas only.

Thank you. I ordered a non wifi Ipad, a garmin GLO2 GPS as I was concerned the Ipad under the TTop may not get enough signal to work well, a ram suction mount for the GLO2 to mount out in the open and an Armor-X ipad case.
