Should I go for a fixed or portable finder?

Why is one better than the other? Are there any circumstances when a portable fish finder might prove more useful, than a fixed one? I read this article about choosing the right finder for my needs, and found it useful to some extent; but I'm still a bit confused about what to opt for.
I'm mostly fishing at lake Erie, and generally have no problems with the waiting part of the fishing; but my wife does; and one has to do what Mrs. wants, right?

Since we do not manufacture or offer a portable fish finder it is tough to comment on the merits of one. :sorry
We do offer some very good small units though, but without knowing about your boat or budget it is tough to make a recommendation. Perhaps another member with familiarity of portable units will comment.
