Problems opening RDP-149 to replace trackball

The trackball assembly failed on my RDP-149 VX2 slave unit. I tried contacting Furuno Panama a few times (about 3 months ago, before coronavirus) and never heard a reply so I have purchased a replacement trackball assembly and tried to install it.

I removed all the screws on the back that were recessed but it seems that there is a metal “tab” preventing me from lifting the front cover, which includes the glass screen protector, so that I can access the trackball assembly. This metal tab connects the front "buttons assembly" with the frame inside the unit.

See attached/inline photos.

I know Furuno does not recommend that customers try to open the unit themselves but a few months ago, we tried to contact Furuno service multiple times with no response and right now I doubt we can get it serviced given world events. We need to have this functioning for a long offshore passage, so I appreciate any help you can provide to help me get this apart.

If you click on the photos, you can see the larger versions and see the tab I am talking about. All photos are from the left side of the unit.

Thanks in advance!

You are taking off the bezel and not opening the case properly. In the installation manual in the appendix they have nice instructions how to properly open the case to install optional items like the ARPA board. I recommend following those instructions carefully if you insist on doing this yourself. I wouldn't recommend starting a repair like this before an important trip if the product is needed. Can you PM me a copy of the unanswered e-mail you sent to techsupport@furuno.com.pa ? I will ask Panama while they never responded. Although I am sure they can do the work, the service center for the Americas in Camas Washington.

Thanks for the quick response. Panama is in lockdown now so we won't be able to take it there anyways.

I had a bit of trouble removing the nut shown in the picture below. It seems completely corroded. Do you have any suggestions?

I may be able to use a cutoff wheel and dremel the nut off, but then I need a replacement nut. Is that something I can order from Furuno? If not, can I get the specs so I can try to find a replacement nut elsewhere?

The nut and connector most likely will need replacement. Be very careful because that connector is soldered right onto the main board. The main board can be cracked or damaged if too much pressure is used. Yes the connector and nut and be purchased from your authorized Furuno dealer.
