What would it take for Furuno to setup their equipment software with the option for a user to have passcode protection on it? Right now, it's an open market for stolen units on the black market, just rip a multi thousand dollar unit out of the boat and sell it...

Scott B,

It's feature that we should consider doing.

Currently, Furuno USA Inc. does have the ability to tag any unit's serial number in our system, with the contact information for the legal owner if the unit is ever recovered.

For those who lose these units, it would certainly be a small comfort to know the thieves can't use them nor sell them since they would be unusable.

How would a theft victim notify you, or register a unit as stolen?

If a valid dealer or customer reports a unit as stolen, we can tag it in our database (by serial number). If the unit is ever sent into us for service, we contact the police and the dealer/customer. Normally the stolen item will be confiscated by the police for the investigation. We will not work on any item that doesn't have a serial number.

The idea to be able to pin-lock units or waypoints has been suggested before. Japan hasn't done this yet but as things have been progressing, I believe it is now in serious consideration.
