MFD8 compatiability

My current radar is an old Furuno 1942 MKII. I have the opportunity to upgrade to a MFD8 multifunction display.

Is it possible to use the existing radar array with the new MFD8? I assuming the new MFD8 will work as a stand alone without the NN3D black box?

Open to your thoughts & advice. Thanks

No the 1942mk2 is analog radar with large type of scanner cable. The NN3D back in 2008 started the beginnings of the new DRS (Digital Radar System) units that use Ethernet communications with smaller cables. There is no compatibility between the two.

If considering an upgrade, I'd look at the 2.2kw 1623 stand alone radar, the 4kw 1815, or the 4kw DRS4W first-watch wireless radar as excellent upgrades on a budget with the least effort to refit your boat. :cool

If the scanner is good from the 1942mk2, the display could be replaced with a newer style display from the 1945 radar if you wanted.
