Map details for tztxl

Hey all,
New to the forum. I've been saving up for a new electronics package and am looking for some real world information. I live in the northwest (Oregon to be specific). I really like all the features and reliability reports of furuno. Seems like the one draw back has been the mapping on the previous units. I would really like to see what the new maps looks like but I'm struggling to find any actual pics from the units other than the advertising vids. None of the local marine electronics stores carry the new tztouchxl units around here. I really want to know how the coverage is in my area. If anyone could take some screen shots of the maps off the central to southern oregon coast that would be very helpful. Bathymetric maps would be really nice to see. Could anyone tell me where these new maps are coming from as far as the source for the bathy maps. Thanks for any information. I've been doing a lot of research on the different marine electronics companies and furuno keeps coming on top so far. Unfortunately it doesn't look like any of their newest stuff will be on any great black Friday sales. Haha.

If you want to explore it a bit, try the TZ IBoat for ipad/iphone. Same maps source.

In serious electronics, Black Friday seems to mostly be a way to get rid of the old stuff.

Haha, true enough. I'll see if I can check out the maps as you suggest. Would I need a subscription or anything to view the maps?
Yes you would need a subscription to have full access to the US charts. It costs $19.99 for a year, which includes updates issued during the term of the subscription. I believe there are some illustrations on the Time Zero website that give you an idea. I have a TZT XL and the TZ iBoat charts are pretty much identical as far as I can tell. Note that unlike the prior generation of free MapMedia raster and vector charts, you also would need to pay for a $250 subscription to get the new charts on the XL so bear that in mind when you consider the cost. By the way, if you want to sound more like an old salt, always refer to maps of the sea as "charts." "Maps" are of land.

I really like TZ iBoat, which is an excellent planning tool and a great backup for navigation. Once I had an electrical issue on a new boat that disabled all my onboard electronics. The TZ iBoat app on my phone allowed me to navigate intro an unfamiliar harbor that had a narrow channel with no problems. If you do end up with the TZT XLs on your boat, the app will synchronize with the plotters and show all your waypoints and routes and vice versa so you can plan trips at home and then have them automatically downloaded to your boat (assuming you have WiFi at your dock).

Good tip. I'm old but only been fishing the ocean in a boat for about 8 years and only recreationally. Not as salty as I would like. I'm not quite retired yet so hopefully I can remedy that sometime in the future. Would the 19.99 subscription give you all the "charts" you get on your tztouchxl chartplotter? Thanks for the info. It would be worth 20 bucks to see what I'm getting and give me a backup to what I have.

So the price is the same no matter what the device is then. I feel a little vindicated in that furuno is calling their charts maps, haha.

Well notice that the product is referred to as "charts" throughout the FAQ posted above although is is named "TZMaps." The TimeZero parent company was started by French guys. In French, the word "carte" is used for both land maps ("carte") and nautical charts ("carte nautique"). Might explain their lack of sensitivity in the naming.

I believe the TZ iBoat $19.99 US chart subscription covers the same area as the $250 US area TZMap for the TZT XL.

Speaking of the TZ iboat app, when you are connected to your chartplotter with the tz iboat can you see different screens than what is on your chartplotter or is it basically a screen mirror of the plotter? For example could you look at your radar screen on your tablet with TZ iboat while looking at a chart and fishfinder screen on the plotter?

No, TZ iBoat is not mirroring the chartplotter. It runs completely independently of what is on the MFD and can only display a chart screen and certain data boxes. It cannot display the radar or fishfinder screens. The only exception is the synchronization of waypoints and routes. There is a mirroring app called NavNet Viewer released many years ago. I don't know if it works with the newest TZT3 and XL displays since I have not tried it for years. I never found it especially useful as it is quite limited in the configurations it permitted.
