Looking for DRS4D 30m Radar Sensor Cable 001-341-830-00

Hello all,

My rigger made a mistake while trying to fix a crack in my 2013 DRS4D data cable and cut the cable down at the mast foot. Now it is too short to go through the mast and still have enough slack at the top for the radar to swing.

I've looked online for the Furuno DRS4D 30m Radar Sensor Cable 001-341-830-00, new or used, but no joy. The distance from the radar mount to the bottom of the mast is more than 15m. If I buy one of the 10m or 15m cables and try to splice which appears to be available, I am looking at introducing two splices.

I would most likely add 2m at the top, which means splicing a section at the top and having to also have a splice where the cable exists the bottom of the mast. I know that this is NOT ideal. I'm not too worried about the power cable, and know how to splice the shield wires. However this means that I would have to installed two RJ45 couplers for the data cable. I am not familiar with the current cable which is a 4 conductor stranded ethernet style cable nor how much loss the radar electronics can tolerate.

Can anyone help me with sourcing either used cable that is 20m long or has anyone ever tried to make their own cable? I would need to source the power cable with shield and also a stranded 4 conductor ethernet cable, which I can't find online. I could possibly use 8 conductor stranded ethernet cable. I would only use the 4 conductors. I just need to confirm that the wiring will fit through the mast which is very tight.

Thoughts?

The part number that you have is the correct part number for the 30m cable. You would be able to order it through any Furuno Dealer. Here is our dealer locator:

That looks like someone has been storing it upside down as that looks like sediment inside the dome cable cavity. I would be fearful that there is also water inside that dome.

Thanks for the reply. Apparently the 001-341-830-00 30m cable is no longer available. I was able to find a 20m cable in the Furuno distribution system. My only option was to splice the 20m cable at the bottom of the mast into remaining 5m of the original cable.

So, I fired my rigger, went up the mast and dropped the 20m down the mast and spliced in the 4-wire ethernet and 3-wire power cable (+/-/shield).

Furuno tech support advised me that splicing the radar cable was not advised and not supported for products in warranty.

But given that my DRS4D is 12 years old, they shared the ethernet wiring pin out. One of the superstar tech support folks in the Washington office were very helpful, sharing with me that the the Furuno DRS4D radar from circa 2008-2014, uses a LAN connection that aligns with the T568-B Fast Ethernet (100BASE-TX) protocol, utilizing only pins 1, 2, 3, and 6 in the RJ45 connector. Pins 1 and 2 handle transmit (TX+ and TX-). Pins 3 and 6 handle receive (RX+ and RX-).

Everything is woking again.

For those that care, here are the products I used to create a reliable permanent splice of the ethernet and shielded power cable.
I used my aviation avionics background to create a high quality splice. I did not want to use a box with a terminal strip as I was concerned about the shielding continuity and EMI/RFI interference, not knowing how sensitive the radar is to signal degradation issues.

For those that care, here are the components I used:
- Coupler - w/excellet EMI/RFI protection
- shielded RJ45 connector
- solder connector with lead pigtail - used to continuing shielding of coax cables
- JRready Deutsch water and dust proof connectors
