HTS and BTW stopped appearing

Hello.

I have two TZT14, a Navpilot 700 (FAP-7002 and two 711C controls), GP-330B, PG-700, DST-810 and some other sensors that shouldn't be involved. All has been in place and working fine. Recently on my sidebar navigation info box the heading to steer and the bearing to waypoint are coming up as "--". I have not updated software on anything or made any other change to the system that I can think of. This problem occurs on both chart plotters. The autopilot is receiving GoTo points from the plotter fine.

Any help would be appreciated on getting this data working again.

Can you provide us pictures of the full Sensor List, Data Sources, and GPS Status pages? Ensure that the entire screen is visible in the photos as there is a lot that we can determine from these page views.

Thank you for any help you can give. Screenshots attached.

The first thing that we have to do is get the software up to the final release version in your TZT14s. Hopefully both are on the same version of software now, as that could cause problems. I only see one online in sensor list. There was a lot of work done between your software version and the final release of V6.03
Save your points, routes, and tracks data. Do not save your user settings. Make a video of your setup if you need it to go back a specific way. Restoring the saved user settings files across different versions causes problems and can reintroduce corruption or problems within the same versions.

Reset, update, reset, test...

Thanks FishTech. We typically only use one TZT14 and only occasionally use both. For that reason I didn't think to turn on the second when I was getting the screenshots.

This looks like a bit of a process so I will work on it over the next day or so. Can you clarify for which steps I need to disconnect the network and NMEA connections from the TZT14?

I started down this process but got stuck when I found I couldn't copy the software to the SD card on my MacBook. It looks like there is a problem writing NTFS files on a non-windows computer. Is there a workaround for this?

You want to disconnect the cables during the software update.
You must have a PC to download and transfer the files to the USB stick. There is no workaround.

Besides old software, the PGN for Rapid update GPS shouldn't be on going out the MFD as your GPS source is the GP330B and the TZT14 has no internal GPS. As it is now, the GPS data is being improperly regurgitated by your TZT14.

You have an active waypoint and good GPS/SOG/and Magvar showing in the sensor list? The active GOTO is working with a line between you and the destination? You have tried while moving the boat at 3 knots developing good SOG/COG? Did you factory clear the unit after updating? It would be recommend NOT to add any user data before trying because sometimes bad user data can cause problems as well. I have tied it with our shop unit and HTS and BTW show up every time as long as I have an active goto and good data. It might be the unit needs to be evaluated for repair. That is an odd one.

I am at anchor so I have not tried with speed, but I do get a line between me and the destination. I will be underway on Friday and will try it then.

I did add back waypoint data and tracks. I can do another reset before trying.

Did a reset. Reloaded my charts. Got underway. Good GPS/SOG/Magvar. No HTS or BTW. Fiddled with a few things. Still no luck. 10 minutes later they are working again. Must have been one of the settings I changed but since it didn't fix it immediately I don't know which. I didn't change much. 1 or 2 PNGs and a few settings in the initial setup menu.

I have isolated the action that makes Bearing to Waypoint and Heading to Steer appear or not appear. if in the units menu I change the direction to True the BTW and HTS appear but if I change the direction to Magnetic they do not appear. Also the VNG field is giving nonsense numbers, even when there is no active go-to point. There is apparently still some problem to be worked out. I am attaching current screen shots of the sensor list, data sources, PNGs and GPS screens. Some values have changed since resetting, etc.

All help appreciated.

Doug

So flipping quickly though the photos, I likely got some new and old mixed together, but here are some of the items I noticed.

Navpilot is not a good source of depth so the Navpilot shouldn't be set as the preferred source. At best it is getting regurgitated depth from whatever source it is picking up. Drink from the source not after it goes downstream and the cows have been at it.

TZT14 doesn't have a GPS so it isn't the raw source for date and time. Best to have that be the GPS unit not the MFD.

Normally ROT would be turned ON by default from the pilot. Either someone has turned that off or you just happen to catch it at a time without reading. If ROT stays blank, you would want to check the pilot has the ROT PGN turned on to go out

Navpilot is not a wind source. This should be something like your 501. Granted you must be moving to have it normally provide True information because everything at the dock is Apparent. (if you read both at dock True will be missing or read the same as apparent, depending on the device.)

Pilot is NOT a source of STW (Speed Thru Water). This should be the DST810 as long as it is working.
