Furuno 1730 Radar

I have a Furuno 1730 radar that is malfunctioning. Basically it runs for 20 minutes and then the screen stops showing any echos (radome is still spinning). So I am assuming that the unit is heating up or something as it will work if I place in stand by for a while and the turn the transmit on. Anyway, I found a used 1720 head and was wondering if it would work with the 1730 radome. Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like either the IF amp board in the scanner which passes the radar video or the SPU board in the display unit that processes the radar video is going bad. At this point the problem could be in the scanner or the display unit. It would need some troubleshooting by a dealer.

To answer your question, the 1720 display is NOT compatible with the 1730 antenna.

Thank you for the advice. Online tech support thinks it could be the magnetron. Not sure it's worth going through the hassle of sending it in. I'm tempted to just look for an antenna on Ebay if I can find a compatible one as they are usually pretty low money. Do you know of a document or website where I can see the compatibility of antennas for the 1730?

There is no master compatibility listing. There are many radars that only are compatible with their original parts. sometimes the answer is different depending on if you are planning on keeping the display or the radar scanner. Why not buy an entire used radar or an entire used 1730 so you have spare parts? I can give you some possible model numbers to look for if you tell me which piece you plan to keep. (antenna or display) Honestly with the problem you report the issue could be in either unit, so it is a bit like rolling the dice. You might be digging yourself a hole of frustration.

Hi Johnny....I got my hands on a 1930 receiver and the open array antenna. A couple of questions. First will the antenna cable from the 1730 that is already run work with the 1930 setup? If not, do you know where I can find a cable for this as the one that came with it is too short for my use. Also, I have a copy of the 1930 manual in pdf from from online but the schematic diagram for the wiring of the antenna is difficult to read. Do you know where I could get a better copy?

The raw cable used for the 1930 radar (sold from 89-93) is the same raw cable stock (RW6536) but the end where it connects to the scanner is different. The 1930 has terminal lugs and the 1730 has VH and NH connectors. The cable itself can be used but you would need to redo the scanner end of the cable for the radar type you plan to use. You can buy these VH/NH connectors and pins from your dealer if you need them. The unit is old and the manual was scanned in so not as good as manuals of today. Some users still have the original manual. Maybe this will help you.1930scannercable.jpg

Excellent. The cable I have already installed is for the 1730 with the VH/NH connectors so I just need to cut those and put terminal ends on to connect to the 1930. I guess my only concern then would be whether the colors match up between the units since I can't read Japanese.

To the right of the Japanese, is English showing the colors.
When you see the (B) next to a color it means BIG gage. Sometimes you have two of the same color in a cable. (one small, one BIG). I hope it all works out for you.
