Encoder issue

My encoder got doused heavily in a thunderstorm yesterday. After operating properly this am for two hours a crosshairs starter running amok on the screen making crazy choices. I unplugged the encoder and the systems working fine now. Do you think my encoder is toast or will it possibly dry out.

It's a relative;y simple device and pretty well sealed internally. However, if there is water in the gap between the outer ring and the sensors. it could easily start generating a lot of spurious movements. I would be optimistic that since it was fresh water, it will return to normal once it is thoroughly dry. If it is not too hard to remove, you might ensure it is in a nice dry indoor location for a few days.

Mine has never gotten wet but it does occasionally act a bit jumpy in rough conditions, which I assume is due to the ring rotating a little on its own.

They are manufactured for Furuno by a company called Grayhill. You might try contacting their customer support directly to see if they have any suggestions. https://grayhill.com/touch-encoder/

It was very hot and dry here today so at the end of the day I turned the MFD off, reconnected the encoder, and fired the system back up. It all worked properly so I’ll hope for the best. My upholsterer did get my console cover finished and it goes on tomorrow so here’s hoping for the best. If it acts up tomorrow I’ll remove it from the boat and dry it like you recommended.
