Dual Frequency clutter

Follow up question...

If I search with Dual Frequency and no AF, I get a lot more clutter in the left LF half of the display. Do I just use enough gain to make the LF side barely OK, and at that gain setting the the HF side clear..?

Thanks again....John

Good morning Mindi,

Yes, the gain settings for high and low frequency are going to be different. The LF side is subject to more interference from turbulence and other disturbances found in the water column. Typically I like to see more stuff on the screen than a completely clear picture. But everyone has their own preference. You could try to turn both the LF Gain settings and HF Gain settings to a point where you are starting to see come clutter, then you can use the Clutter control feature to suppress some of the weaker clutter returns and not sacrifice the front panel gain.

It would be good if you followed up with some before and after screen shots, also what sounder you are using and have you adjusted any other filters or features.

Sorry, I am using an FCV 628. You seem to be suggesting that I adjust the LF and HF gains separately but surely there is only one gain setting applied to both sides in Dual mode...? If that is so, then obviously a compromise is required and I guess I was looking for a suggested method of establishing a suitable compromise. I expect the answer is trial and error.

Thank you Mindi for the clarification on the sounder.

Yes, as you mentioned on that model the gain adjustment covers both HF and LF, if you were using a sounder like the 295 you get different gain adjustments for both HF and LF.

With that being said, there is a gain level calibration setting where you can adjust the starting point of the front panel gain for both frequencies. So if you go into the menu and choose the calibration you will see LF Gain Adjustment. Default is both set to "0". So you can either lower the LF front panel gain adjustment or increase the HF front panel gain to see more. It would help to see some photos of what your looking at to help guide you with what frequency to choose to make the gain adjustment on the calibration menu. Or you can just play around with the settings to your liking.

But that is where I would start, also note this should be done before the clutter control filter is changed.
