DRS4W wifi signal strength

I recently replaced my long faithful 1715, which didn't make it through Hurricane Michael, with a DRS4W. Love it, but the signal from the sensor 16 feet up the mast has to go through a steel wheelhouse roof to get to my iPad 2, and it's marginal. I don't want to try to route this signal through an amplifier, so one option is to move the iPad up to the bottom edge of the windshield. But, is there any way to extend the antenna on the sensor unit? That would just as well solve the problem, if it can be done, without rearranging all my gauges and instruments on the panel. Any thoughts?

No there isn't anything that would be supported. You might find someone who has created their own modifications who can offer some thoughts.

Is this why many people seem to mount this Radar aft instead of on the mast? I've been thinking of buying one and came up with this question.

I suppose if you have a steel bridge it would help going aft. I have seen plenty on the mast but none that are trying to shoot wifi through steel and having it on the mast.
