Difference between AIS transponders FA70 and Japan's FA60?

Hello,

Currently in japan, I'm looking at potential replacement of my FA50 AIS and I selected FA70 as suitable for my needs, but the local Furuno supplier tells me only FA60 is available in Japan. I cannot really see any differences on the translated japanese and the Furunousa web pages, but I would like to be sure.

The FA60 is a standard Class B AIS transponder not sold to the Furuno USA market. The FA70 is a Class B+ AIS Transponder, utilizing SOTDMA. The FA70 higher power must not yet be supported by the local government so not approved for sell in that region.

I'm slowly realising that Furuno seems to segregate the japanese domestic market from export quite strctly. .
There seems to be conflicting information too, for instance the compatibility of the DRS2D radar (with external PSU and via Ethernet) with the TzTXL range. The FAQ on furunoUsa says it's OK but local japanese supplier say it's not, because it's not "certified".

Always follow local laws. It would be much like buying a VHF outside the USA that isn't rated by the FCC (Federal Communications Commision). It is likely okay to have if traveling but not living here. Japan is not allowed to sell units that are not certified by their governmental authority. Now that the question has been asked and answered, what you do is up to you.
