I am looking into replacing my tr1 ap with the new 720 furuno. What heading sensor should be used as I have the older vx2 system? and are the 500 and 500r heading sensors the same?

Our new autopilot system 700 series uses a different compass, the PG700 which is NMEA2000.
You can use the output from the processor to feed your vx2 with NMEA 0183.

Thank you for the response . The ap700 will still be able to get info from vx2. Like contour of botum or is nmea2000 required?

The system takes both NMEA 2000 as well as NMEA 0183 so it will work with your vx2.
