AIS FA-50 on existing Navnet

When I want to install the AIS FA-50 in my network, can I use the existing GPS-32 for the GPS signal or do I need to install the GPS antenna that comes with it?

The current GPS-32 provides the GPS-signal already to MDF8 and HS2721 VHF, doesn't it.

I don't see the need for two antenna's of the same brand?

(store maintains I need to use the extra antenna?)

Thanks,

Ruud

Yes, you will need to install the extra antenna. It is needed for timing.

So, to clarify... the FA-50 requires it's own GPS source and will not use one that might be available to other MFD12's on the network?

Not to complain or criticize, just to narrow down what's set up on my boat too.

That is correct, if you don't connect up the provided antenna that comes with the FA50, it will not transmit. It needs it for it's own clocking and direct use.

Can the FA-50's GPS be used by anything else on the network? I noticed there's options for what it sends:

  • Auto: Auto-detect of where to output AIS data.
Continuous AIS: Output AIS data continuously.
Continuous GPS: Output GPS data (L/L, SOG, COG)
Continuous ZDA: Output time data continuously.
Continuous AIS/GPS: Output AIS/GPS data continuously.
Continuous AIS/ZDA: Output AIS/time data continuously.
Continuous GPS/ZDA: Output GPS/time data continuously.
Continuous AIS/GPS/ZDA: Output AIS/GPS/time data continuously.

What's recommended for use with a 4 display MFD12 setup?

The FA-50 can offer basic position to the network. I recommend it only be used as a backup source because it is not a WAAS fix. For the MFD12/NN3D system, I like the BBWGPS (aka as GP320B) as a primary source of position data unless you have something even better like a sat compass.
