Help with old 511

Hi, new to community.
My garmin chartplotyer has failed rendering my autopilot useless. I need to make the 511 stand alone so that I can use it without the garmin. Tried shutting down the garmin but the 511 requires speed data. Can anyone tell me how to set the speed data to manual?
Is this the only thing stopping the 511 from operating independently of the garmin?
This is a bit of an emergency for us as we are trying to head south down east coast, and currently stuck in Rockland...
 
Menu - Parameter Setup - Speed Calculation - (SOG, STW, or Manual)
Set your typical speed when using the NavPilot.

That should be it. All other sensors, aside from navigation/route info, should be independent.
 
Thanks will try that. Screen is so corrupt that it's hard to navigate, but hope I can make it work. Many thanks jvk
