I have a DRS4D and NN3D. The Furuno support site only has instructions for updating the DRS4D from the TZT units, but the procedure is the same (upload folder on SD, update via display unit). Can I update the DRS4D via my MFD12? I don’t want to just try it and accidentally brick the radar

You should contact support and they can get you software that allows you to update the radar using the NN3D. The software is NOT the same.
Thank you. Mine is at v1.16. It looks like the only updates in 1.18 are for TZT related features, looking at the version history. Is there any reason beyond general good practice to do this update? If it adds no features, fixings no issues, and doesn’t effect performance it seems I perhaps should simply leave it alone?
Unless you plan to run two DRS units at the same time; no reason for you to update.
