what is different between X band and S band furuno radar? Will X-band radar is better for my 30 meters fishing boat than S band? Thank you

linhkienbodam,

There are two basic marine radar frequencies commonly known as "X" and "S" band, with the majority of marine radars that operate on X-band. X-band is the most widely used because of the ability to utilize smaller antennas that fit on most boats and to provide better target resolution.

S-band radars on the other hand are often used for specialized applications, such as seeing through heavy weather or precipitation and for use in long-range bird detection. S-band antennas and gearboxes are much larger, with the smallest Furuno S-band antenna at 9 feet long and can be as long as 12 feet.

Vessels in excess of 300 gross tons are required to have two operational marine radars with one of those radars needed to be an ARPA. Most of these vessels are outfitted with one X-Band, and one S-Band Radar System.

Hope this helps..? :)
