Hi
I´m consider updating my NN3D which is mounted in an aluminium box in the cockpit (sailboat). Here it becomes exposed to all type of weather and sea spray.
Since the TZ2 has a sd card slot at the rear it means that the plotter need to come out each time we´re updating the maps. Will this make it possible to keep as an waterproof installation for years?

We´re sailing in high latitudes and cold climates. How do you operate the TZ2 with gloves on your hands?

I've used the TZT2 with those mobile-phone gloves you can get and it works OK. You can also just plug in a track-ball mouse to the USB (the kensington orbit works fine https://www.kensington.com/en/gb/4493/k ... croll-ring , but the slimblade doesn't) Furuno also do a range of external waterproof pointer things but they are a little pricey!

I too am interested as to the waterproofness of the unit, the documentation doesn't say much... It mentions having to wrap the connectors in self amalgamating tape and the SD card has a rubber cover, but how would the unit cope on a yoke under a spray hood rather than flush mounted?

Gyda,
The TZT2 should be fine being exposed to the elements and water spray. water spray should not impede the function of the touch screen.
As far as utilizing gloves, I highly recommend any type or mobile device or touch screen capable gloves, as CharlieP explained, especially if you are using thicker winter gloves. I do know some companies make winter sports/heavy winter gloves that work well with any type of touch screens.
As far as the SD card being installed on the back, then performing chart/software updates can be a bit frustrating, especially if the TZT2 is flush mounted. What I would recommend is installing an SDU001 external SD card reader for the TZT2 that you can mount under or on the dash as well, however, the SDU001 does have a rubber guard to keep out any sort of water intrusion, but I would still recommend you install it under the dash or in a spot where most of the water spray wont make contact with the SDU001.

Thanks for the answer.
Since I have a sailboat with an open unprotected cockpit, the possibility to add several extras at the box where the plotter is installed are limited, so may be a TZT will a better choice than the TZT2..?

Will the TZT be in the production line by Furuno for a quite a while yet, or do you know of any successor to appear soon?

Apart of the Rotokey and the sd card slots on the TZT, what is the main differences between the TZT and the TZT2 in every day use?

Spray definitely affects the unit. In rough weather, when there is a lot of spray hitting the screen, all kinds of weird things happen. Pop up boxes constantly.....pop up. The screen changes to single screen to sonar, etc. All because water is hitting the screen. That has been my experience.

Gyda,

So the TZT and the TZT2 are virtually the same when it comes to performance. The only major differences between the two units is that the TZT2 uses a slightly different operating system/platform (the way that the menu structure is set up), the TZT2 has a built in GPS receiver and also the capability to hook up a transducer directly to the back of the unit, and lastly, the TZT2 doesn't have a roto knob.

With that being said, the roto knob is great, especially in rough seas when trying to precisely touch, zoom in, or navigate through the menus. However, even know the front chart card slot has a rubber seal to keep water out, some water could still creep into the machine where the roto knob is located on the TZT14 and TZT9 displays.

So if water spray is the biggest factor, then I would probably steer more twords the TZT2 displays, due to the fact that the front of the display is a solid pane of glass, which means less chance of water intrusion. Also like Jagsare1 stated, if you have major amounts of water spray, then yes the water may effect the functionality, minor spray should not be issue.

Also, Jagsare1, have you updated your TZT2 with the 4.01 software yet? the Latest software update improved some of the touch functions and may possibly help out when it comes to water spray effecting the unit, but its just an idea and I have yet to test this out. Plus its always a good idea to have the most up-to-date software loaded onto your units.
