I have a Furuno 1834C/NT bought in 2010 with software version 195002403.04 ( RDP-149, 4346-2922) and I an unable to upgrade to the newest software. When booting up, the unit does not seem to recognize the files on the SD card. I have tried multiple cards. I have also never been able to save any waypoints to the SD card. When attempting to do so, a blank screen appears indefinitely, or at least for the 4 hours when I was patient enough to wait. Two files get created, but do not contain any usable information and are only a few bytes each.

It sounds like you are using a memory card that is too big or your unit has a problem with the card reader. Ensure you are using a blank card that is 2GB or less. If you don't need the points and routes in the unit, you can try to factory clear the units memory that supports the card reader. (Hold ALARM on power up) Doing this will clear most everything including your points. Most common problem is not using the correct sized card. You can normally get 2GB cards from the camera department at Wal-Mart or mail order from places like www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com. Typically they cost about $5.

I first tried formatting a 512 MB card from a very old digital camera and had no luck. The software update was ignored and no way-points were saved. I then made a copy of my C-MAP chart card to the old 512 MB card and was able to load my charts just fine. I took a chance and formatted the original C-MAP card and tried using that for the software update, and still no luck.

I am willing to try a factory reset, but only as a last resort. There are about 300 way-points to re-enter manually if the update doesn't solve my way-point upload/download issue.

I would recommend trying a new SD card and don't format it. The card will have the proper format right out of the package. Try to save you waypoints to the new blank card (2GB or less) and if it doesn't work, you might want to at least use your digital camera to take photos of your points list before trying to clear the unit. If clearing doesn't work, then your unit has a card reader problem that should be evaluated for repair.
