tvg distance

On occasion i set the tvg distance deeper than the depth to obatain a clearer image.

Does that mean that one of my other parameters is out of whack?

In practice, sounder settings will vary from day to day. Different depths, water conditions and life in the water column all can/will change. In raising your TVG setting you are lowering your gain in the upper part of the water column. If I had to guess, water color on that day was a little more green than on other days. Normally the bluer the water the cleaner it is and the less clutter you will see.
