hi all
new to this forum
i have a furuno 588 and tm260 transducer fitted to my new boat
the sounder loses the bottom at about 14knts not sure what speed they read to
when i turn starboard it will start reading
have entered a couple of pictures i gather i should install transducer closer to the keel
i read you have to be 6 inches from the prop should be able to mount closer
don't really want holes all through the new hull
any help would be grateful
thanks jamie

Jed,
What you are experiencing is pretty typical of a transom mounted transducer. The sounder works well at the dock and as the speed picks up the performance starts to degrade. Also turning the vessel will increase or decrease performance depending on the direction of the turn. So what to do? That first strake where the arrow is pointing is going to cause water flow issues for anything mounted outboard. You can try adjusting the tilt and the depth of the transducer in it's current location and you may gain a little better performance. In looking at the pictures you provided (thank you for those) it appears that your smoothest water flow will be within that 18" center area. That being said, is it feasible to mount the transducer in that location without it interfering with your outboard. Hard to tell without seeing more detailed side views of your current setup.

thanks for your reply
cheers jed

hi
went out yesterday sounder still struggles above 10 knts unsure what to do
went out to 100m doesnt really read to well drifting
would this be settings or transducer location
any help would be appreciated
cheers

Jed,
I didn't think you would see much difference.
A sounder really doesn't care how fast the vessel is moving as long as it has a smooth flow of water over the face of the transducer. Unfortunately transom mounted transducers have more water flow issues than ones in fairing blocks.

hi snips
sorry mate to be a pain
if i installed the transducer near the arrow before the chine do you think this would work
i could send more photos if this would help
thanks jamie

Jed,
Pictures would be nice. A stern shot and one from the side that shows the depth of the transducer in relation to the prop.

hi snips
i think i will bite the bullet and install a thru hull transducer
could you help recommend a transducer best suited our needs
really enjoy bottom fishing from 100m to 400m or so
dad really enjoys blue marlin fishing though sounder not so important for this
my boys also enjoy spearfishing so we also come into 20metres
any help would be appreciated
cheers jed

Jed,
If you want performance down to 400m you probably should look at fitting the B-260. It is the same as the TM-260 but is a bronze thru hull with a high speed fairing block. It is going to be big so the question will where to mount it. I would look at that center section about 1-2ft forward of the transom. However, this area is right in front of your prop so you want to make sure that the turbulence from the transducer doesn't interfere. It is hard to tell from your pictures how far down the prop is from the bottom of the hull. You may be in a situation where the B-260 is simply to big to fit. If that is the case you will need to go with a 600 watt transducer in a high speed fairing. Much smaller but much less depth performance also.
