RDP 149 Update and Chart selection help requested

Hello to all,

So I have an RDP-149 serial # 4346-2859 that's been in storage for a few years. It's running software 195002403.04. So I bought a Navionics+ SD card for charts, MSD/NAV + CA US1IUZ1ELW1GU7. This is obviously not compatible because when I insert it the plotter freezes. Pop it out and it works again.

What are my options for using this unit? Should I convert to cmap and if so how? What charts or cards should I be using? I'm an electronics tech but not familiar with marine equipment. Any advice on the best way forward would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Looking at the software version history I see this
"Version 3.04, 07 C-MAP and Version 3.04,06 Navionics"
I attached a screenshot of my program info. Does the "07" mean my unit is already converted to Cmap??

So my unit appears to be a GD1920C/NT that requires CMAP MAX charts. That explains why the Navionics charts aren't working :) Where can I download a software update for this unit? I found 4.01 for the 1920C but the page for the 1920C/NT doesn't list any software. Should I use the same download? Any assistance would be appreciated. Cheers.

Your unit is programmed for C-map version 3.04 with boot loader 7.
Considering Navionics no longer sales compatible cards for these units; it is uncommon to see someone wanting to convert to Navionics. What exactly does it say on the top of your Navionics card you are trying to use?

The newest software for C-map is 4.03
The newest software for Navionics is 4.01

You also need to be aware that the 10.4" units have different back lighting depending on when it was made. You have to ensure you get the correct programming for the hardware you own.

Your self test appears to show you have the CCFL backlit unit.
To get conversion software, you need to contact your local distributor directly. The software posted on the Furuno USA website will only upgrade existing types. (C-map to newer Cmap / Nav to newer Nav)

My largest concern is if you really have a compatible Navionics chip for the unit before you go to all this trouble.

Johnny thanks so much for your reply.
So the Navionics chart card purchase was my bad, the front door of the SD slot is clearly marked CMAP NT MAX. So I've ordered the correct card from CMAP. I don't care to change and use Navionics, CMAP will do just fine.
Where can I find a link for the CMAP 4.03 firmware to download? The only software link I could find was this one for 4.01 which I tried but the unit just wrote a file back to the card _furuno.txt containing one line, the alphabetNULL.

Can you point me in the right direction of the CMAP 4.03 firmware? Cheers.

You can get the software by looking up a radar model "1944C/NT" on our website that uses the C-map RDP149. Under support button on the product page you will find a "software" tab. You will be offered the software and instructions to upgrade your unit to 4.01.

Hey Johnny,
I just tried the files you suggested and I don't get any different behavior on startup and no update. When I check the card the plotter has written one file to the card _furuno.txt containing this string "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz". So I'm not getting a successful update. I'm using a regular CoreMicro 1Gb SD card. Any ideas?

Johnny,
I followed the instructions word for word but the units start procedure is the same, no delayed screen or beep codes. This is how my card looks after being in the unit.

I would recommend powering up the unit and try to use the upgrade chip to save your waypoint data on. If it won't allow you to save waypoint, either your chart card reader has a problem or the SD card does. I would try to reformat the card in FAT format and/or try another SD card. I would delete that Furuno txt file because it isn't needed.
