NXT radar on TZT2

Found this text on a review: “With the radar’s ARPA (automatic radar plotting aid) on, the red targets also get an echo trail, and an audible alarm is sounded,” says Eric Kunz, senior product manager for Furuno USA.”

Does this hold true even for the TZT2? That you get echo trails? I'm using the unit and can't remember ever seeing that even when I select a target.

The TZT has echo trails and also works with the NXT radar. This is the one you seen quoted. For those using the NXT with the TZT2, the echo trails are not as important because of the new super fast target tracking feature. At this time the TZT2 doesn't offer echo trails.

Okay didn't think so and agree I don't need it. Wanted to verify if maybe I had something turned off on my TZT2.

I was looking for similar after watching the videos!

I can also see the NXT on my PC TimeZero navigator display and that has echo trails, it's obvious then that the Doppler is good, but not as good as human brain pattern matching!

Do we have any timescales for echo trails on the TXT2?

I believe he's asking if/when it will be implemented? There is a rumor that their next software update will add the features.

Sorry Dave and Charlie. If and when we hear from our parent company regarding software features we will be glad to respond. But as of now this "rumor" is speculation and we have no information to pass on.

Thanks ,I figured that was the case. In my opinion the NXT works awesome the way it is. I think guys used to the echo trails are having a tough time trusting the unit without seeing what direction it's going based on the trails. Being a rookie radar user the way it does it now is very easy to understand.

Some users are used to other brands where the ARPA isn't as good and generally the vector lines jump around every which way. I have always found the Furuno ARPA to be very reliable if not the best on the market. The new advanced target tracking takes about ten seconds to get a full lock with vector line. It isn't to say the software might not be changed in the future, but we can only comment on how the system is currently designed and working.

Sure and understand. I think that most of the comments about the echo trails and such are coming from people not using the new system and not seeing how well it works. I know of one person that may strip out a new Simrad system because he saw the NXT. Thank you. :furuno

To be fair I can see if you have never had echo trails the Doppler would be just fine, but I have both echo trails on my TZ Navigator and Doppler on the TZT2. if you have a target that is mucking about in front of you and only occasionally actually coming at you, then you can miss it on Doppler, you will have a big obvious target in front of you with echo trails.

Its all about increasing situational awareness and having both does that :)

Sorry but that's not true. It's not like the target vanished without echo trails. With Target Analyzer off the target mucking around in front of you will be visible as a green mark. With Target Analyzer on it will be red and you will get warnings.

Hi Dave,
Yes, I agree the target is still there, but unless you are constantly watching the Radar (which you shouldn't be, windows are there for a reason!) it will just be another reflection until it moves towards you again and turns red. With echo trails it's a target with a big blur aimed at you (Hopefully the ARPA has picked it up as well!)
I really like the Doppler (although the more I use it the less I think it is 'true' Doppler and more like pixel memory) and it's why I bought the NXT. I just miss the echo trails and the situational awareness it gives you.

I guess I'm not getting you. Even with echo you have to look at the screen. Echo is also holding a spot from memory. The NXT shows you exactly where it's at so why does it matter where it's been? If you are stationary and the object is stationary the object will be green and always there. If you start to move it will turn red, if it moves it will turn red. You get an audible alert. There is also a line pointing in the direction it's traveling and ARPA gets it every time. The radar is spinning so fast that the ship would have to teleport to not catch that it's moved. The red object is in continuous motion. I've watched items while I'm going 50 and as I move the item moves smoothly along.

Hi Dave,
Have you ever played "Hello Mr Fox" with your kids? Or watched the angels on Dr. Who? It's like that, just because a target isn't moving when you look at it doesn't mean it isn't coming towards you to eat you! Echo trails give you a history while you are not looking at it, it's another aid to navigation. I see ARPA not picking up targets all the time, especially if the target is dithering - and frankly they are the most dangerous ones :)
I've also see quite big fast moving targets vanish into the shadow of other ships and obstructions in the water, the only way you know they are there is the remains of the echo trail, until they pop out and bear down on you! Equally a new target can start moving towards you and have no echo trail, but be nice and big and red on the NXT, which is the great addition of Doppler.
I'm not trying to say echo trails are better than Doppler, but they are still very useful and I would hate to see them ignored in later releases.
Cheers...
