I like your news series, I am planning a somewhat similar upgrade, so am watching with the "so called" fine tooth comb.

In episode 6, part 2, there was a screen shot of what you called a "Hull Boundary Layer" (time 10:27), that implied that for 35' and larger hulls, you would want the transducer face sticking down a little, below the hull.

However, in episode 7, the transducer face was installed perfectly flush with the hull. Any further advice on which way to do it?

It is all about getting a good flow of water over the face of the transducer. As the video shows they removed a flush mounted B-260 before they installed the new 488. The reports were that the performance of the B-260 was good in that location. They really don't show the flat spot in detail but it tapers to a point so essentially making the location into a large keel fairing.

However if the trailers cross member wasn't in that location they could have also look to fit the SS-260 combo transducer using the fairing.
