Hi there. I have a question regarding using a fcv585. When I am marlin fishing, I want to be able to mark marlin and bait within the top 50m (surface to 50m down), When im in say 100m-400m . i dont care about what is below that 50m line, so am curious as to how to see just the top 50m, also, the best settings to have the sounder on to be able to see as much bait and marlin (clearest picture) ?? Thankyou for any help! :furuno

Shanej,
The FCV-585 has eight preset ranges, below is the default settings when you are using feet. I would preset them for your fishing requirements. As far as "the best settings" that is difficult to say and can vary from day to day depending on water conditions. I guess the best advise I can offer is don't be afraid of seeing a little clutter on the sounder. A lot of users will turn the gain up until they see speckles (clutter) on the display and then turn it down, if you do this you may miss fish targets.

Thankyou for your help snips. I was also wandering...when bottom fishing in really deep water (350-500metres) how would you set the sounder to view just the bottom 50mtres or so? ... Thankyou for any help!

Shanej,
Think of the viewing range on a sounder the same way as a radar. On a radar, even though there be land at a range of 3nm your close in target will be smaller. To see these targets better you dial the radar to a shorter range of .5nm. It is the same with the sounder. But one thing to know, you will not be able to do this if you have the 585 in a AUTO mode I.E. Range, Fishing or Cruising. This is because the 585 is looking to display the bottom on the screen and will adjust the range accordingly.
