FCV 587 NMEA Sentences

Hi All,

I have searched far and wide but can't seem to find the answer... I have just purchased a Furuno FCV 587 and want to connect it via NMEA to the Garmin GPS Map 551s. The Garmin unit says it is both NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 compatible.

The guys at actisense tell me that I need one of their converters to convert the 0183 to 2000 to get the units to properly talk to each other. Is this correct? If so is it because the Furuno NMEA sentences are proprietary and need to be converted to NMEA 2000 before the Garmin unit will recognise them properly?

If not, then I'm assuming an NMEA 0183 to NMEA 0183 will work fine... can anyone walk me through which wire colours should be connected to each other?

Cheers and really appreciate any help

Adam

If the Garmin has 0183 then the direct connection should work fine. I am not sure how actisense would be have been involved. Did Garmin tell you to contact them? Do you want a bi-directional connection or just one way. (ie. bring GPS to FCV587) Keep in mind Garmin doesn't support the standard TLL sentence so the mark feature will not work with a Garmin.

thanks for that Johnny - I think the actisense guys were saying that the converter to nmea 2000 would increase the functionality...

ideally want bi-directional connection... real shame about the mark feature and garmin!
