SC-30 correction needed or nice to have

The local Nobeltec rep is giving me a Furuno equipment list that contains a SC-30.
Is this required or just nice to have?
Is there some sort of calibration procedure to account for it's position that will likely be 15-20 feet above the water?

Also, does it REALLY need to be mounted far above an open array RADAR?

Thanks, Eric

If you are doing Nobeltec PBG, then the SC30 would be a requirement. If your not doing PBG, then you might have other options. They would know best. There isn't a calibration procedure like you have with a flux gate. You might have to offset the heading but that is normally done in the MFD or PC. Sat compasses (regardless of manufacturer) should typically be the highest thing on the boat. You can not have it blocked by your radar or inside the radar beam. It should be above the radar and just about everything else.
