Looking to do my first update and was wondering if a Mac was ok or do I need to use an regular IBM style computer. If the the Mac is ok do I follow the normal procedure or are there any additional steps?

Using a Mac should work just fine since all you are doing is putting the files onto a SD card.
Before you put files on the SD Card, make sure the SD card is properly formatted.

DB is correct you are just moving data when it comes to most data used to update the unit or charts. One exception to this is the full OS/APP update for the TZT. The full update will require a format (Bootable NTSF) that the apple will not understand. The normal app update uses a standard SD/fat format so the Apple would have no problem writing to the card.

Is there a pre configured chip with all the latest updates and the os? Part number?

Correct. That is a preconfigured NTFS chip with full APP and OS for upgrading any TZT unit.
