Why Planning Mode and Navigation Mode?

Why do these two different modes exist? Why can't all features be available all the time without different Modes that require a restart to switch between?

And why are there Planning and Navigation tabs at the top of the screen that have absolutely nothing to do with Planning Mode and Navigation Mode? Silly me though those tabs selected between the modes while the program was running.

There is nothing preventing you from running Navigation mode all the time; if you wish. The reasons for two modes is because when you run Navigation mode it is looking for all your data inputs that it expects to see, and processes them. Planning mode (like when the PC is disconnected from the boat/data inputs) will allow the PC to run faster because you are letting the software know to ignore the loss of data.
